Women Led OPDs are the epitome of Feminism-Lucy Mulombi

Lucy Mulombi, the chair of a women-led organization of people with disabilities and chair of Kakamega County Disability Caucus in rural Kenya has said the women-led organizations of people with disabilities are the epitome of feminism and they ought to be engaged with.

Mulombi made the remarks during a side event organized by Sightsavers to call for action on disability rights at the Women Deliver Conference held in Kigali, Rwanda.

“Women led OPds are the epitome of Feminism. I want to repeat: Women with disabilities led OPDs are the epitome of the Feminist movement. Let us engage women with disabilities organizations,’’ Mulombi told the participants.

“we have solutions to the barriers we are facing today lets us keep the talk alive. We have been talking amongst ourselves, we have been talking to each other,” she noted.

Mulombi, is also a small business owner and participated in sight savers livelihoods project which is supporting micro entrepreneurs with disabilities to develop and grow their businesses noted it was time to tell the world.

“Time is now we want to talk to the world about issues for women and girls with disabilities,” she said 

 She said that as a woman with a disability she struggled a lot with discrimination but one day she decided enough is enough and started advocating for the rights of other women and girls with disabilities.

“My work as a grassroots activist involves advocating for the rights of women and girls with disabilities. It starts with mobilising them so we come together and speak with one voice on the issues affecting us,” she said.

Women Deliver is a leading global advocate that champions gender equality and the health and rights of girls and women, in all their intersecting identities.

The Women Deliver 2023 Conference (WD2023) in Kigali, Rwanda, attracted over 6,000 delegates attending in person and 200,000 participating online, the conference was the largest meeting on gender equality in recent records.
