200 teachers who excelled in teaching mathematics were commended

**Representatives of various companies put their efforts into the development of statistics**

It is an event organised by the African Institute for the Promotion of Mathematics (AIMS) in collaboration with the Telecommunications Society, Airtel Rwanda

More than 200 teachers from across the country who have excelled in student achievement in math and technology have been recognized for their contributions.

The third edition of the event reached out to math teachers from 14 AIMS-affiliated districts and those from other parts of the country who identified differences in math teaching that are reflected in student achievement.

This ceremony took place on this Sunday, March 26, 2023 where these teachers were given various prizes including computers and iPads that will help them lose their way in technology.

Director of AIMS in Rwanda, Prof. Sam Yala, said that this event is organized to appreciate the teachers who have excelled in their work.

He said, “This is an event to appreciate the teachers who teach our children who are doing excellent work. We felt it was important to thank them for their hard work.”

“We are delighted to be a sponsor of this award-winning event because numbers are so important these days. Nowadays many things require technology such as communication and technology.

“Right now there is artificial intelligence that requires a lot of math and so on, now we need more people in our company who do math, especially women; that’s why we encourage them to participate in this episode.”

On this day, certificates were given to 380 teachers who have been receiving training on using technology to teach mathematics for two months.

This is a program of courses organized by AIMS in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the MasterCard Foundation while the courses are provided by the Institute of Technology and the International Computer Driving License (ICDL).

These courses are given to teachers in 14 districts, who have received them so far, more than 5000. It was started to increase the number of students, especially girls studying Science. The goal was to reach 228,000 students but now it has reached 276,323 of which 60% are girls.

Prof. Sam Yala said that the reason why they continue to put effort into this program is to improve the students studying this course because it has been proven that it contributes to development.

He said, “The goal is to increase the number of girls and boys studying Science and Technology because this is a valuable part of the economy of every country, increasing the number of students is to accelerate economic development.”

This is in line with the Director General of the National Office for Primary Education (REB), Dr. Nelson Mbarushimana, who said that if many students attend these courses, they will contribute to the development of the country.

He said, “Mathematics and science are very important because they are the source of knowledge. Now the plan of MINEDUC and REB is to use as much as we can so that students who graduate from high school have enough knowledge in these courses to help them get a job and continue with university.

On the part of the teachers who received awards and trainees, they thanked the various institutions that contributed to their knowledge.

Nyonizera Mediatrix who teaches at GS Giharwa located in Nyanza District, has been trained and praised as one of the best teachers. He said that the knowledge they received helped them expand their teaching.

He said, “Before I used to teach math using only words but now I also use physical examples. This has paid off because every year I see five students with the first ‘score’ in mathematics.”

Congratulations to Fidel who teaches at GS. Kaburiro in Nyamasheke District said that the training he has been receiving for a few days will help him improve his teaching methods.

He said, “I learned a lot from this training. I learned how to use technology so that I could use math in different ways. The knowledge I gain here will help me increase student success.”

AIMS was launched in 2003 with the aim of improving mathematics skills. It started working in Rwanda in 2017, working in other countries such as South Africa, Senegal, Ghana and Cameroon.
